AN AUSTRALIAN CHRISTMAS
DARLING HARBOUR 1989 - 2003
Mary Lopez created the concept of An Australian
Christmas in 1989 to raise funds for the work of the Wesley Mission.
The two-hour spectacularly costumed pageant at Tumbalong Park Darling
Harbour told the true story of Christmas. It featured a 1000-strong
cast featuring many of Australia’s most high profile artists, a procession
of 500 actors and dancers from the NSW community, a 400-voice choir,
a symphony orchestra, 50 animals, and pyrotechnics.
The show featured a diverse range of Australian artists including Tommy
Tycho, John Williamson, Human Nature, John Paul Young, Julie Anthony,
Slim Dusty, Shanley Del, Eric Bogle, Doc Neeson, Graeme Connors, stars
of the Australian Opera, Leah Purcell, Alan Dargin, Jackie Love, Tony
Barber and Maria Venuti.
An Australian Christmas was broadcast nationally on the 7 Network (1989
– 1997) and Network Ten (1998 – 1999).
